FREEDOM 251 A BLUFF

Aakash Tablet Maker Calls 'Freedom 251' A Bluff, Says 'Made In China' Cheaper Than 'Make In India' Anyday
Questioning the feasibility of Freedom 251, Datawind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli trashed the explanation given by Noida-based startup Ringing Bells that domestic manufacturing have allowed them to offer the world's cheapest smartphone for just Rs 251 or less than $4.
"Firstly, make in India is actually assemble in India. While local assembling is the first step towards local manufacturing, it is impossible to have such a huge impact on the bill of materials," Tuli said.
Ringing Bells president Ashok Chadha in an interview that the company would not only sell the smartphone for Rs 251 but also make a profit of Rs 31 from each unit. Chadha primarily stressed that "economies of scale, domestic manufacturing and online sales without much marketing expenses" is allowing them to deliver the world's cheapest smartphone.

Make in India costs more than made in China

It is questionable as to what impact does online sales and marketing have on the actual cost of components or the total bill of materials.
During the launch, Chadha while justifying the price of Freedom 251 said, "The cost of making one unit of the smartphone is around Rs 2,000. By making in India, this price goes down by Rs 400. Then we will sell online only. So, this pulls down the price by Rs 400 further. We are sure that this smartphone will be in a lot of demand. We are assuming to save around Rs 500 from this economy of scale. At last, we wait for our platform to grow, so, that we can make money from other services."
In reply to this, Tuli said, "To take advantage of economies of scale, Ringing Bells has to be of the likes of Samsung in the market. The promise of just delivering 25 lakh units online and another 25 lakh units offline is not that big to have such a drastic impact on the making costs. Also, it is absurd to hear that online sales will have an impact on the bill of materials."

The price of 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM is more than the price of the device

Commenting on the 'make in India' advantage, Tuli said, "In reality, make in India costs more than made in China. Local assembly simply provides some duty benefits. However, in no way can it help Ringing Bells reduce the cost by around Rs 400 per unit for a Rs 2,000 smartphone."
Amidst all apprehension, the Aakash maker summarised the entire hype around Freedom 251 by saying, "Freedom 251 is just a marketing promotion of an existing Chinese product already being sold in Nehru Place (in New Delhi). It is impossible. The price of 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM is more than the price of the device. There is no innovation but do expect surprises soon."

10 Optical Illusions That Will Blow Your Mind

10 Optical Illusions That Will Blow Your Mind

Optical illusion are characterized by visually perceived images that are deceptive or misleading. The information gathered by the eye is processed by the brain to give a percept that does not tally with a physical measurement of the stimulus source. There are two main types of illusion - physiological illusions that are the effects on the eyes and brain of excessive stimulation of a specific type - brightness, tilt, color, movement, and cognitive illusions where the eye and brain make unconscious inferences.  These optical illusion pictures, animations, and videos below have been collected by Maniac World over the years

It seems that the brain, in specific situations, literally gets bored and starts scaring you. The easiest way to prove this is to perform the simple experiment of looking steadily into a mirror, for a few minutes at a time. Soon, you're very likely to see a monster. That monster is a combination of your face and your brain. Does that make it better or worse?

There are a lot of creepy situations that start happening when you look in the mirror. Low light and a fearful mood certainly help, but the primary reason why people have so many mirror related freak-outs, and why it's become such a big game at slumber parties, is straight biology. The brain doesn't have the energy or the processing power to notice everything all the time. Sitting at your computer now, you're probably unaware of the feel of the seat under you, your clothes against your skin, and any lingering smells you might have noticed (no judgement) when you walked into the room. Your mind mostly tunes them out. But the sense that most of us rely on almost all the time, sight, has also been narrowed down. You are probably unaware of anything outside of the range of the computer screen, and you probably haven't noticed minor changes to that. That is why most updates on computers come with a sound or a blinking light.

Here's why Salman Khan wants to get DELETED from Awards competition

New Delhi: Superstar Salman Khan, who is at the peak of his career, wants to get himself out of the Awards competition. The ‘Dabangg’ star feels that it is the time for the younger generation to win the awards and not him, who is there in the industry from a long time.
Talking to media at an award function, Salman said, “I feel really happy when others get award awards don’t matter much in my life. Though, I like the award functions and the get-togethers”.
When asked on competition among the nominees for the award, Salman said “That’s why I say you should delete me from the competition. I shouldn’t be kept among the four nominees because it’s unfair for the fifth person. We have been here for such a long time and to be nominated is not fair. So you should give younger generation a chance,” he added.
Salman further stated that he will continue to attend and perform at the award functions, though not for the trophy.
“Talking about me, I can come and perform. I can attend. But I think younger generation should get a chance to win the award now,” he expressed.
Well, seeing his stature in the industry we guess it’s a right call from Salman Khan.

IITs To Hold Entrance Exam Abroad For Foreign Students

NEW DELHI:  In a bid to attract more international talent, the prestigious IITs for the first time are planning hold their entrance tests in Singapore, UAE, Ethiopia and SAARC nations next year to select foreign students for undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

At recent a meeting between officials of HRD and External Affairs ministries, eight countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (all SAARC member nations), Ethiopia in Africa, Singapore and Dubai (UAE) have been zeroed in on for holding entrance tests for foreign nationals from next year onwards.

"The entrance tests to the IITs abroad have been held till now only to admit Indian nationals. This is for the first time that it has been planned to admit foreign students through tests held abroad. It is aimed that the plan would be operationalised from the JEE/GATE exams to be conducted in 2017," a senior HRD Ministry official told news agency PTI.

The students will be selected through a common entrance exam which would be administered by the IIT with the help of Indian missions in these countries.

Officials, however, added that seats to be offered to foreign nationals would be supernumerary or additional in nature and would not reduce those available to Indian nationals at the 18 IITs.

The fee applicable in the case of foreign students will also be more as the subsidised fee which Indians pay would not be applicable to them.

To facilitate these foreign students, MEA will consider giving them research visa for the duration of the programme rather than one year at a time, officials added.

While the test is to be held in 2017, the outreach programme for the exercise would begin from August this year and will be conducted in all these eight countries. IIT Mumbai has been asked to prepare the necessary information material for this outreach. It would include details of the tests, the courses and FAQs. A web portal may be created for this purpose, sources said.

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will be the nodal agency on behalf of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for these tests.

Earlier, IIT-M Director had prepared a report on comprehensive system to attract international students to the IITs.

After the report was prepared, Khakhar was asked to prepare a detailed plan for conducting JEE and GATE exams abroad.

It is learnt that the government is keen on more foreign students studying at IITs as it could boost their international academic rankings.
